Central Library

About the Library

The library of Tara Devi Harakh Chand Kankaria Jain College started its journey 17 years back with a collection of 600 books. The Central Library is presently located on the 2nd floor of the newly constructed G+4 storeyed College building. Over the years, the collection of the library has grown and at present the library boasts a collection of over 10,000 books, journals and magazines on various subjects. The library is equipped with up-to-date computers, internet facility and Wi-Fi. Of various new initiatives that have been adopted, the application of modern library management software needs mention. Keeping in mind that most of the library visitors are young college students, 24 x 7 Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) has been made available. Besides that, book lending service, photocopying (Xerograph) service and internet facilities are also available.

Strategic Goals and Objectives:

The following are the goals and objectives of Central Library Services System-

  • To develop and enhance the capability of the library resources and services to meet the demands of the curricular, instructional, and research programs of the academic community by providing regular funding to yearly acquisition of library materials
  • To establish a computer infrastructure for all library operations and services by acquiring library computer software and hardware to make computerization functional
  • To strengthen the library's bond to the library patrons by establishing "Friends of the Library" program which would assist in the development of the library collection
  • To provide services that enhance the quest for knowledge and intellectual activity
  • To create various bibliographies and library pathfinders for easy access and retrieval of information
  • To create an enjoyable atmosphere wherein students and faculty may carry on the learning process.

Library Clearance

  • Clearance certificate is issued to all the members of the library before he/she leaves the college. Library clearance is issued at the time of surrendering the library cards and clearing all dues

Seminar Library

  • Seminar Library In-Charge can take books from the central library for their respective libraries. Central library issues library clearance only for the central library. Seminar library clearance should be issued by the respective departments

  • The library is automated using Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) and has digitization facility through KOHA software
  • The library has active subscription of N-List Programs of INFLIBNET-an IUC Centre for UGC
  • AV room with Audio-Visual resources
  • Large reading space with comfortable seats
  • CCTV surveillance for maintaining discipline in the library
  • The library has separate sections for Newspapers, Books, Magazines for Competitive Examinations, Journals, Periodicals and New Arrivals etc.
  • Internet facility for students, teachers and non-teaching staffs
  • The library maintains a History museum in the reading area.

Library Rules and Regulations:

  • Students must carry the college ID cards with him or her to get the books issued/ returned.
  • Students are not permitted to use someone else’s college ID card. In case of loss of college ID card it should be immediately reported to the college office.
  • Two books of the same kind will not be issued to students at a time
  • Students of all the three or four years’ course must get their library clearance certificate before the final examination of University of Calcutta
  • In case of loss of any borrowed book, it must be reported immediately to the Librarian. The student must either replace the lost book or pay the cost of the latest edition of the lost book along with overdue charges, if any.
  • Students must not bring books borrowed from other libraries in the college library. Personal belongings are to be kept at the counter at the readers' own risk.
  • Library shall not be responsible for any kind of loss or damage to personal belongings left in its premises.
  • Library Reference books will not be issued.
  • Violation of library rules or misconduct by any student may result in discontinuation of the library privileges
  • All users must observe total silence in the library and its environs at all times.
